Materials & Care
Fine jewellery is made to be worn and to last. A little care goes a long way — here’s how to keep your FSS pieces looking their best for years to come.
Soak your piece briefly in warm water with a small drop of mild dish soap. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to gently remove any residue, then rinse thoroughly under clean water and pat dry with a soft, lint-free cloth. Avoid abrasive cloths, harsh chemicals, or bleach-based cleaners, which can damage the metal surface.
Solid gold is water-resistant, but we recommend removing jewellery before swimming in chlorinated or salt water, as these can dull the finish over time. Shower gels, shampoos, and conditioners can also cause build-up in intricate settings. As a general rule, remove jewellery before water activities.
Store each piece separately to prevent scratching — ideally in the FSS gift box it arrived in, or in an individual soft pouch. Keep jewellery away from humidity and direct sunlight. Chains should be stored clasped or gently coiled to avoid tangling and kinking.
Perfumes, hairsprays, and body lotions contain chemicals that can affect the surface of jewellery over time. The golden rule: jewellery goes on last, after all cosmetics and fragrances have been applied and absorbed. This simple habit significantly extends the life of any fine piece.
Most gemstones can be cleaned with warm water, mild soap, and a soft brush. However, softer or porous stones — such as opals, pearls, and turquoise — require extra care and should not be soaked or exposed to chemicals. If in doubt, wipe gently with a damp cloth and dry immediately.
We recommend removing fine jewellery before exercise. Sweat contains salts that can dull gold over time, and active movement increases the risk of pieces catching, bending, or being lost. Store your pieces safely before your workout and put them back on afterwards.
A professional clean once or twice a year keeps fine jewellery in excellent condition, particularly pieces with gemstone settings where build-up can accumulate. Between professional cleans, the at-home method above is perfectly effective for regular maintenance.
Lay the chain flat on a smooth surface. Apply a single drop of baby oil or olive oil to the knot and use two fine needles or pins to gently tease it apart. Work slowly and never force it — patience is key. Once untangled, wipe away the oil with a soft cloth and wash gently.
